Making Chrome Text
1. Open a new document or create a new layer.
2. Choose the text tool and create your text layer, works best with
a thick font. The font size should be at least 60. (I used the font
"Impact" in this example)

3. Then select the pixels by clicking the text layer and holding down
the apple button (not sure for windows)
4. Then click the channels pallette and create a new channel and name
it 'Mask'.
5. With the newly created channel visible and selected, run filter/Guassian
Blurr at 16, then repeat at 8, then again at 4.

6. Now click back into your layers pallette and
creat a new layer and name it 'Final Chrome'. Now fill the selection
with a gradient of white to black and make the original chrome text
layer invisible. |
It should look similar to this-

7. Now open filter/render/lighting effects. Choose
directional lighting and the settings of:
Intensity-35 (Full)
Gloss-84 (Plastic)
Exposure-10 (Over)
Ambiance-10 (Positive)
Texture Channel-Choose mask (or alpha 1)

It should look similar to this-
8. Then run Image/Adjust/Curves and follow the screen shot. (Play around
with the settings here until you are happy)
9. There you go, now add a drop shadow, or outline to help define the
edges.

I repeated the same actions on a expanded selected of the text to get
the background of the font as seen here.
